Volume containing autograph manuscript logs of the United States frigates Independence and Congress, under command of E. A. F. Lavallette during the Mexican War. Entries for the Independence, Mar 25-Jul 19, 1847, describe cruising between San Francisco and Monterey, California, and the bay of Mazatlán, Mexico; also present are two entries, Aug 30-31, 1846, during passage from Boston to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Entries for the Congress, Jul 20, 1847-Feb 22, 1848, describe cruising between San Francisco, Monterey, ports on the Gulf of California, and Mazatlán. Entries made while in Mazatlán harbor, Nov, 1847-Feb, 1848, relate to the occupation of Mazatlán.
